The webinar’s objective is to discuss the main findings of research work conducted by Professor Fujiwara regarding mass testing difficulties, including methodological challenges in estimating the number of deaths during the pandemic.
On July 1, from 5 pm to 6 pm, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Public Policy and Government (FGV EPPG) will hold a free webinar on the challenges involved in estimating the number of fatalities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The debaters will be Professor Thomas Fujiwara of Princeton University; Edson Kondo, the dean of FGV EPPG; and Gil Riella, a professor at FGV EPPG. The moderator will be Professor Graziella Testa, also of FGV EPPG.
The webinar’s objective is to discuss the main findings of research work conducted by Professor Fujiwara regarding mass testing difficulties, including methodological challenges in estimating the number of deaths during the pandemic. The seminar will also discuss how to estimate excess (higher than expected) mortality, based on civil registry data containing deaths registered at notary offices, and how to compare these figures with the official death toll produced by the government’s SIM/DATASUS system. The participants will also analyze the numbers from 17 Brazilian municipalities with more than 1 million inhabitants.
In addition, the event will present a comparison between the data supplied by DATASUS and other official sources related to deaths caused by the pandemic. The speakers will also perform a critical analysis of the COVID-19 mortality rate, based on available information about the pandemic’s evolution in Brazil.
