In early September, Brazil celebrated the 200^th anniversary of its independence. To debate the country’s future and the challenges that it will have to tackle, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo School of Economics (FGV EESP) is holding an event called “200 Years of Independence: Development Challenges.” The meeting will take place on September 30, at 8:30 am, in the FGV Room at Rua Itapeva, 432, Bela Vista, Sao Paulo.

The event will bring together specialists to discuss three fundamental topics for Brazil’s development: education, fiscal issues and growth. The opening remarks will be made by Professor Yoshiaki Nakano, the dean of EESP. There will also be a talk by Professor Luiz Felipe Alencastro of FGV EESP, who is also a professor emeritus at Sorbonne University, Paris.

There will then be three panel discussions. The first one, about education, will feature Professor Renato Colistete of the University of Sao Paulo, Professor Thomas Kang of Rio Grande do Sul Federal University, and Naércio Menezes, who is the coordinator of the Ruth Cardoso Chair at Insper, a higher education institute in Sao Paulo, a researcher at Insper’s Center for Public Management and Policy and the director of its Early Childhood Applied Research Center. The moderator will be Professor Fernanda Estevan of FGV EESP. 

The second panel discussion, about fiscal issues, will involve Thales Pereira and Rafael Cariello, both professors at FGV EESP, as well as Vilma Pinto, the director of the Senate’s Independent Fiscal Institute. The moderator will be Professor Leonardo Weller of FGV EESP.

The third panel discussion will look at challenges for economic growth. This subject will be discussed by Professor André Villela of FGV EPGE and Samuel Pessôa, a researcher at FGV IBRE. The moderator will be Professor Luciene Pereira of FGV EESP.
